Schmigadoon!

What do you get when you mix a rocky marriage, a magical town, and a musical? You get Schmigadoon! This musical comedy ran for two seasons, each focusing on different fictional towns.

Starting season one, main characters Josh and Melissa go on a backpacking trip to patch up their relationship and soon find themselves trapped in the musical town of Schmigadoon, where they can’t leave until they find “true love.” The second season picks up with the now-married couple again searching for a remedy for their woes. In search for Schmigadoon yet again, they arrive at the much rougher Schmicago, a parody of the 1970s musical Chicago.

Schmigadoon! night club stage set

Contrasting the initial Golden Age of Musicals, this second season steps into the world of scandal and danger. On Air Design was pleased to be a part of the complex stage design in this homage to musicals. The burlesque-style Kratt Klub cabaret bar is one of the most notable filming locations.

This stunning red stage features sensual, dark elements such as crushed velvet finishes and dim lighting. A metallic red and white custom wallcovering printed by our studio can be seen on the surrounding walls of the bar, adding an interesting pop of shine and texture to the set design. Keeping in the theme of the production, this wallcovering is able to maintain the ominous “roughness” of Schmicago with ease.
